Squamous epithelium in respiratory tract of children with tracheo-oesophageal fistula.

چکیده
squamous metaplasia. This change was chiefly in the posterior muscular wall of the trachea, but frequently extended to the lateral and anterior walls of the trachea, and into the bronchi. It is suggested that the primary localization to the muscular trachea is related to the embryology of the congenital deformity, and that secondary factors such as acute infection and oxygen therapy may extend the lesion. The lesion is probably an important factor in the respiratory complications of children with tracheo-oesophageal fistula.

Squamous metaplasia of the tracheal epithelium in children.
Thirty-seven (1-6%) tracheas from 2170 children showed squamous metaplasia. (Cases with tracheo-oesophageal fistula and congenital heart disease were excluded). The metaplasia extended into the bronchi in 15 cases. Features of pulmonary retention were present in seven cases. Respiratory infection, probably viral, seemed to be the most significant causative factor in 20 children, including those...
متن کاملCongenital oesophageal respiratory tract fistula presenting in adult life.
Congenital oesophageal respiratory tract fistula presenting in adult life is rare. A tracheo-oesophageal and a broncho-oesophageal fistula presenting in a 22 year old female and 68 year male, respectively, are described. In both, symptoms of chronic recurrent pulmonary suppuration were initially attributed to alternative aetiologies, resulting in diagnostic delay and inappropriate management. C...
متن کاملManagement of giant acquired tracheo-oesophageal fistula in a neonate using an oesophageal patch.
A neonate who underwent arterial switch operation had his postoperative course complicated by the development of tracheo-oesophageal fistula. He underwent multiple reparative procedures, ultimately requiring the oesophagus as a patch to close the large defect in the trachea and subsequent interposition of descending colon to restore the continuity of the upper gastrointestinal tract.
متن کاملRespiratory morbidity after repair of oesophageal atresia and tracheo-oesophageal fistula.
Respiratory morbidity in 334 patients aged 1 to 37 years with repaired oesophageal atresia and tracheo-oesophageal fistula is reported. Just under half the patients were subsequently hospitalised with respiratory illness. Two thirds of admissions were before 5 years of age. Five percent were admitted on more than five occasions. Patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux and low birth weight were ...
متن کاملTracheal compression as a cause of respiratory symptoms after repair of oesophageal atresia.
A case of tracheal compression in an infant after repair of a tracheo-oesophageal fistula and oesophageal atresia is reported. Tracheopexy completely relieved the symptoms of apnoeic attacks, cyanosis, and convulsions. We suggest that tracheal compression in infants and children with repaired oesophgeal atresia can not only cause life-threatening attacks but also be responsible for recurrent ch...
